Covent Garden 2008

With its bars and restaurants, shopping and entertainment, Covent Garden, in the heart of Westminster, is one of London’s most popular destinations…

Presenter

…and today I’m going to show you why, as I take a walk through this unique part of London and discover why it appeals to both visitors and Londoners alike.

First of all, a history lesson. The area that we now call Covent Garden was once the property of Westminster Abbey and known until the 17th century as ‘the convent garden’.

It wasn’t until the 1630s, that the much lauded architect Inigo Jones set about designing the basis of what is seen today.

Presenter

Jones was inspired by the French and Italian market towns built in the 16th century and the area soon became a base for London’s traders…The market became so popular that this magnificent building was constructed and it’s well worth taking the time have a good look around…

Why do you think it still attracts so many visitors?

Peter Greatwood

There’s so much to be found here really. You’ve got immense architecture, history. You’ve got some fantastic shopping. The market is fantastic, the people are fantastic, the people here are wonderful and the stuff you’ll find here is quite unique.

Presenter

This is St Paul’s Church which most people only see from the entrance on the west piazza but if you take my advice you’ll take a little stroll around the back and take a seat in these stunning gardens which often go unnoticed by visitors in a hurry.

St Paul’s Church has been known for many years as the actor’s church due to its strong theatrical links. And when you look at the history of Covent Garden you’ll notice that theatre and performance has often been associated with this famous square…

…and alongside the world class entertainment you’ll also find street performers like veteran Richard Geraghty.

Richard Geraghty

I would say it takes a lot of balls to be a Covent garden street performer, but I would say that, I’m a juggler.

It’s a different audience every day and something different can happen to you in every show and I think the audiences appreciate that too.

Presenter

The entertainment may be a big draw for visitors but locals will tell you that Covent Garden’s main selling point is its shopping…which suits me just fine!

Vox pop 1

The stores are quite trendy and the atmosphere is very vibrant

Vox pop 2

I just love it. I don’t come to London very often but when I do this is my routine.

Presenter

Of course whether you’re shopping, or here to be entertained, the best thing about visiting Covent Garden is taking a break and there are loads of places to refresh yourself no matter what your budget.

Well, I hope you got a taste of life in Covent Garden. Remember, when you’ve finished exploring the sights there are loads of other attractions just a short walk from here but right now I’m going to put my feet up, have a glass of wine, and watch the world go by. Cheers.
