With more than 20,000 different products on display, London’s famous toy store, Hamleys, has something for kids of all ages, and provides a perfect tonic for weary West End shoppers.

Hamley’s is the largest toy store in the world. We have 7 floors within this store, each designed for a specific age group, boys, girls, infants. We’ve been trading now for around 245 years, and in this location since 1881. It’s a real antidote for being in the West End and shopping in large department stores, to coming to an environment where kids can enjoy themselves, that’s designed for children as well as Adults alike. Everything’s accessible, you can play with everything, touch everything, there’s nothing really behind glass or anything like that. From the moment you walk in, there’s generally some kind of show or theatre, or a display that will catch your imagination, or whether it be a guy with a bubble machine or a brand new product we’re demonstrating, but equally, you’ll find that it reacts to all senses.

I think there’s a real atmosphere that’s exciting, and also people tend to slow down when they come in here, actually enjoy and experience the store on each floor. Rather than just simply walking around and looking at merchandise, they get a chance to be part of that.

As well as the latest high tech gadgets, Hamley’s remains loyal to the more traditional toys.

The oldest toy in the store would be a Victorian rocking horse. It’s a Victorian traditional rocking horse with a leather saddle and real horse hair.
